Red Wings Gatherin’ Grains Fundraiser

It is a new fundraiser for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings, one that could go a long way in helping the Junior A hockey club. Called Gathering Grains, it looks to agricultural producers in the area for their support of the team as they complete the 2020 harvest.

Head coach and general manager Rich Pilon explained the concept came from scout Josh Housman, who had seen similar fundraisers conducted with great success in other communities.

“He came up with this idea here of looking for some help from our local producers just to try and ensure that our team and our players have a bright future, and keep providing our community with some entertainment right in Weyburn,” Pilon told Discover Weyburn.

The fundraiser is getting assistance from all three of the major grain terminals in the Weyburn area – Richardson Pioneer, Viterra and Parrish & Heimbecker. Producers will be able to donate a portion of their grain brought in to any of those terminals.

“We’d take anything right now, just with the situation with COVID-19, just to try and get the money to try and make sure that these players, and the community of Weyburn, has that entertainment of a hockey team,” Pilon added.

The fundraiser is underway, and will be running until December, with all the proceeds from the donated grains going to the Weyburn Red Wings.
