The Highway 39 Cup rivalry between the Weyburn Red Wings and Estevan Bruins wrapped up the regular season in dramatic fashion, ending in a split between the two long-time rivals.
Both clubs finished the eight-game season series with identical 4-3-1 records, leaving the standings deadlocked when the final weekend concluded. The Highway 39 Cup, sponsored by the Chiefs of Police from Weyburn and Estevan, celebrates one of the SJHL’s most intense rivalries along Highway 39.
Prior to the final games of the weekend, both Police Chiefs agreed that the trophy would be awarded strictly by points in the season series. If the teams remained tied, the Cup would be shared between the two organizations.
With the teams finishing level in points, the trophy will indeed be shared. However, the Red Wings finished the series with a +1 goal differential, giving Weyburn the right to host the trophy first before it is later shared with the Bruins.
The season series once again highlighted the intensity and competitiveness of the Highway 39 rivalry, with every game playing a role in ultimately deciding the fate of the Cup.
