The Weyburn Red Wings are proud to announce that our Main Camp teams will be named Team McMillan, Team Onstad, Team Rumball and Team Daley.
The names recognize Dwight, Wayde and Tyler McMillan, Jim Onstad, Ron Rumball and Joe Daley—six individuals whose hockey accomplishments, community leadership and commitment to the Red Wings have left a lasting impact on Weyburn.
TEAM McMILLAN
Honouring Dwight, Wayde and Tyler McMillan
Few names are more closely connected to the Weyburn Red Wings than McMillan.
Dwight McMillan began his Red Wings journey as a player in 1961 before becoming the most successful coach in SJHL history. During nearly four decades behind the Weyburn bench, he won six SJHL championships, five Saskatchewan-Manitoba championships and two national championships—in 1984 and 2005. He was named SJHL Coach of the Year three times and became one of only three coaches, alongside Scotty Bowman and Brian Kilrea, to reach 1,000 career victories. Dwight’s influence went far beyond victories and championships. For generations of players, he was a coach, teacher and mentor. His teams gave Weyburn countless memorable moments and helped make the Red Wings an important part of the community’s identity.
His sons, Wayde and Tyler, continued the family’s Red Wings tradition. Both were born in Weyburn and became accomplished Red Wings players. Wayde recorded 194 points over 210 regular-season games with the Wings before continuing his career at Merrimack College. Tyler ranks among the organization’s leading career scorers with 200 points in 192 games. He later played NCAA Division I hockey at Ohio State and several seasons of professional hockey. Together, Dwight, Wayde and Tyler represent a remarkable family legacy of local pride, loyalty and excellence.
TEAM ONSTAD
Honouring Jim Onstad
Jim Onstad is a Weyburn-born Red Wing who successfully carried his hockey career from his hometown to the NCAA.
After playing for the Red Wings, Jim attended the University of Denver, where he played four seasons of NCAA hockey from 1983 to 1987. Jim returned home and became a respected business and community leader. He spent more than 35 years with Weyburn Security, including 25 years as managing director. His community service has included involvement with the Weyburn Red Wings, Red Wings Alumni, Weyburn Housing, the Saskatchewan Games Council and Weyburn Regional Economic Development. His story represents the value of pursuing opportunities through hockey and then bringing that experience, leadership and commitment back home.
TEAM RUMBALL
Honouring Ron Rumball
Ron Rumball’s contribution to the Weyburn Red Wings spans generations.
Ron moved to Weyburn in 1966 to become vice-principal at Haig Elementary School. He soon became involved with the Red Wings, serving the organization as a board member, director of scouting, team manager and, beginning in 1995, full-time general manager.
During his time with the organization, the Red Wings won eight SJHL championships and national championships in 1984 and 2005. Ron is one of the few people to have been part of an organization that competed for the Memorial Cup, Centennial Cup and RBC Cup. As both an educator and hockey builder, Ron dedicated his life to developing young people. His steady leadership helped build a championship organization while strengthening the connection between the Red Wings and the people of Weyburn.
TEAM DALEY
Honouring Joe Daley
Joe Daley began his remarkable junior career with the Weyburn Red Wings in 1961 and played two seasons in goal for the club.
From Weyburn, he advanced to professional hockey and eventually played 106 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings. He later became a star with the Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association, winning three Avco Cup championships. Known as the “Holy Goalie,” Daley retired as the WHA’s all-time leader among goaltenders in games played, victories and playoff victories. Joe’s career showed generations of Red Wings players what was possible. His accomplishments brought pride to Weyburn and helped establish the Red Wings as an organization capable of preparing players for hockey’s highest levels. He has since been inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, WHA Hall of Fame and Weyburn Red Wings Hall of Fame.
A LEGACY FOR TODAY’S PLAYERS
The names McMillan, Onstad, Rumball and Daley represent more than past accomplishments. They represent leadership, perseverance, community service and pride in being a Weyburn Red Wing.
By carrying these names at Main Camp, today’s players will compete in honour of the people who helped establish the standards and traditions of our organization.
