The Weyburn Red Wings are proud to announce that standout defenceman Max Chakrabarti has officially committed to Augustana University, where he will join the NCAA Division I hockey program this fall.
Chakrabarti had a sensational season with the Red Wings in 2024-25, suiting up for 56 games and recording an impressive 50 points(14 goals, 36 assists). His performance placed him among the top defencemen in the SJHL, and he led the league in power-play assists (25). His efforts were recognized league-wide, earning him the IKS Media Rookie of the Year award.
Though his BCHL experience was brief, Max’s development surged after arriving in Weyburn. He quickly became a crucial part of the Red Wings’ blue line and was a key factor in the team’s success throughout the 2024-25 SJHL season.
Weyburn Head Coach and GM Cody Mapes had high praise for Chakrabarti’s dedication and performance:
“From day one of camp last year we knew Max was going to be a special player. Over time we got to learn more about his work ethic and commitment to the game and his team. He was a huge reason for our success last season, and he’s going to a great developmental program that will allow him to continue to be his best version.
With the changing ways of the NCAA and junior hockey over the last season, we strive to continue to be an avenue to Division I hockey for our players in Weyburn. We are incredibly proud of Max and the work he has put in to get to this point.”
Augustana University, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is an emerging NCAA Division I program that has already begun attracting top-tier junior talent. Chakrabarti, who stands 6’3″ and weighs 191 lbs, brings size, skill, and maturity to their defensive corps.
With his proven ability to contribute on both ends of the ice, Augustana is getting a player who’s ready to make an immediate impact.
