RED WINGS HALL OF FAME

At our recent fundraiser featuring Doug Gilmour, the Red Wings Hall of Fame was introduced to everyone in attendance. We are excited to have the opportunity to showcase the legends who shaped our historic team and community. Below is the speech from the introduction of the initiative, and what it is all about:

“We are very thrilled to see you here tonight as we come together in support of the Weyburn Red Wings. Your presence and generosity make a real difference in helping to ensure the viability of the Red Wings moving forward.

The true success of the Weyburn Red Wings is centered around the fans, sponsors, players, coaches and the Alumni.

The Red Wings Alumni have been quiet contributors to the overall success of the team over the years. The Red Wings would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our alumni for their continued generosity and support over the years. Their contributions have made a tremendous difference to our organization’s success and sustainability. From providing computers, purchasing washer and dryers, and funding educational scholarships for our players, the Alumni’s  commitment to giving back to the program helped shape who we are today and speaks volumes about the pride and tradition of being a Weyburn Red Wing. Thank you to our Alumni for your investment in the next generation of Red Wings, ensuring success on and off the ice.

Tonight, the Red Wings and the board of directors are excited to announce the formation of the Weyburn Red Wings Hall of Fame. We are looking forward to celebrating the rich history and winning traditions of the Weyburn Red Wings over the last 64 years. There are numerous individuals on and off the ice that have contributed to the success and sustainability of this team over the years. From a group of business owners that had a vision for a team in 1961, to being one of the founding members of the Western hockey league, winning 8 SJHL league championships, a Royal bank cup championship, the endless community support and the willingness of groups and individuals stepping up for the team are all a part of our history to recognize. Significant personal, team or professional accomplishments within the organization that have transcended the Red Wings and the team in a positive manner. The Weyburn Red Wings Hall of Fame will consist of three categories celebrating exceptional service or contribution to the team.

The first category is Builder: Individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the Red Wings through their work as coaches, managers, trainers or administrators. Their long term commitment to the club has had a notable and positive impact on the development and reputation of the Weyburn Red Wings, through leadership, character, dedication and vision. Their passion to go above and beyond has raised the team to new heights on and off the ice.

The second category is Community: Individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the Red Wings at the grassroots level through their long-standing involvement with the Red Wings, selfless service to the Weyburn Red Wings and the community. Their ongoing participation has a positive impact on the club and community, inspiring involvement at all levels

Finally, the last category is Player:  Individuals or teams who have made significant contributions to the Red Wings through their play on ice. Exemplified the traditions, values and goals of the team and organization with confidence and represented the Red Wings with distinction.  Their high level of performance and exceptional achievement has contributed to the club and sport while continuously conducting themselves through sportsmanship and character.

This legacy begins today! As the official kick off, we are excited to start the acceptance of nominations for inductees into the prestigious Weyburn Red Wings Hall of Fame. Nomination documents can be found on the Weyburn Red Wings website or simply by using the QR code on the banner. As we work on the final details of how we will be honoring our inductees for years to come, we encourage everyone to take the time to think about an individual or team that deserves recognition.

Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this initiative to life.”

The first round of nominees will be put into the Hall of Fame this season. If you know someone who should be nominated into this season’s inducteees use the link below for that person to be eligible.
