The Weyburn Red Wings had a number of veterans dressed Wednesday night for their game against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines, and it showed, as they picked up a 7-1 preseason victory.

Dawson Atamanchuk scored twice in the win, and also added a pair of assists. Acquired from the Humboldt Broncos in the off-season, he was on a line with off-season acquisition Jeremy Velazquez and returning Red Wing Ty Brown.

“Velazquez is a quick player, he can get to the puck quick, and he works well down low, and Brown obviously he provides some size on the line,” Atamanchuk said after the game. “We had some chemistry there and good dynamics off the start.”

It didn’t look like the Red Wings were going to run away with the game after the first 20 minutes. While Atamanchuk opened the scoring on a break in before the game was five minutes old, the Wolverines replied before the period was over, and the two teams headed to the dressing room deadlocked at one.

“I didn’t like the first 20 minutes so much. The last 40 were good,” Red Wings head coach Wes Rudy explained. “It gave us a good chance to see, to look at what Tanner acquired in the off-season, and it looks good.”

In the second period, the Red Wings opened up the offense, putting 21 shots on goal, and scoring three times. It started with a tally from Noah Wozney, assisted by Jessie Young and Cole Woodliffe at the 6:24 mark of the frame. Brown then notched a goal unassisted, and Devon Becker closed out the scoring with a howitzer on the power play, set up by Wozney.

In the third, the Wings continued to pour it on. Atamanchuk scored his second of the game, assisted by Jacob Piller and Velazquez. Less than two minutes, Landon Walters would pick up a shorthanded goal on a breakaway.

“It was just a good opportunity, and I finished on her, unlike usual,” Walters joked after the game. Skating in his first game in the preseason, he said it was good to get back on the ice.

Velazquez rounded out the scoring for the Red Wings in the final minute, when he found the back of the net, assisted by Atamanchuk.

In the Red Wings crease, the duties were split between Carter Phair and Cody Levesque. Both were solid throughout the 30 minutes each got to spend in the crease, with Phair allowing the only goal late in the first period. It was the first preseason start for Phair and the second appearance for Levesque.
