The Weyburn Red Wings have extended their winning streak to six games after they held off the Nipawin Hawks for a 3-1 win Saturday night. With the win, the Red Wings have improved their record to 8-2-1-0, and are four points back of the Estevan Bruins for first in the Viterra Division with four games in hand.

Carter Phair earned the win in net for the Red Wings, stopping 50 shots on the night. The lone goal which slipped past him came early in the first period, while the Hawks were on the power play.

Nipawin captain Carter Doerksen ended up with the puck on his stick just past the hash marks in the slot during a goalmouth scramble. Phair was down, and most of the players on the ice thought the puck was underneath him when Doerksen scored the early go-ahead goal.

The Red Wings would even the game up in the second period when Jeremy Velazquez scored his sixth of the season. He received a pass from Jordan Kazymyra in the neutral zone, then stickhandled his way through the Nipawin lineup while the Wings finished a line change. He found an open lane along the left wing and ripped a wrist shot past Declan Hobbs.

The Hawks applied pressure throughout the second period, and into the third, but were unable to get the go-ahead goal. Weyburn would take the lead themselves in the third period.

Captain Mike Eskra took a feed from Erik Olson on the power play 2:27 into the period. He fired a shot through traffic in the slot, which made it past Hobbs for the lead. The next goal came four minutes later, thanks to an airmail pass from Cole Woodliffe.

Flipping the puck into the neutral zone, he set up Cade Kowalski for a breakaway, who streaked in untouched from the blueline.

The Red Wings will now prepare for their road trip through the Sherwood Division this coming week. The Wings have defeated all four of the Sherwood division teams in their current six-game winning streak. The trip begins Tuesday night in Melfort. You will be able to listen to the game live on Red Wing Radio, K106.
