The Weyburn Red Wings stumbled Friday night, as they fell 4-3 to the La Ronge Ice Wolves. With the loss, the WIngs are now three points back of the Estevan Bruins for first in the Viterra Division and will need a win Saturday to finish their road swing through the Sherwood Division at .500.
The game started out with Weyburn jumping to an early lead. WIll Cruise worked the puck free from La Ronge’s Egan Wolford along the boards in front of the Ice Wolves bench. The Red Wing rookie then broke his way in and fired the puck past La Ronge starting goalie Merek Pipes. The lead would be short-lived, though.
Tanner Brewster was sprung free on a breakaway from the blueline, and he had a lot of time to find a way to beat Arik Weersink. When he did, it tied the game up at 1-1. The Wings would regain the lead moments later, for the final time in the game, when Ty Brown scored his third in two games, and eighth of the season. The power play goal was assisted by Mike Eskra and Cade Kowalski.
The Ice Wolves would tie it up again just over two minutes later. Austin Bill scored his second of the season, beating Weersink just as a penalty to Landon Walters expired. The lead was extended in the second period when Shane Hounsell got the puck into the twine for his fifth of the year. Nolan Dawson’s power-play goal in the third round out the scoring for the Ice Wolves.
Dexter Robinson scored his first goal as a Red Wing just after the halfway mark of the third. Assisted by Kowalski, it would be the closest the Wings would get, despite all the pressure they put on the Ice Wolves.
