BREAKING: Head Coach & General Manager Bryce Thoma Has Resigned

After three seasons at the helm of the Weyburn Red Wings as Head Coach and General Manager, Bryce Thoma has resigned.

Thoma took over prior to the 2013-14 season and continually improved the team in each of his three seasons, which was capped off by a division title in 2016. It was an emotional decision for the bench boss, who had plenty of thanks to give.

“I’ve definitely enjoyed my time here in Weyburn over the last three seasons. I really have to give thanks to the players, my fellow staff, board members, and of course our fans.” said Thoma on Friday.

“To the players, thank you for your hard work and dedication in helping turn the program around. Thank you to all the staff that I have worked with who are passionate about finding, developing, and helping our players in any way. And lastly thank you to the Red Wings Board Of Directors for giving me an opportunity to be the team’s General Manager and Head Coach and allowing me to make hockey decisions for the betterment of the team.”

Thoma went on to express his love for the hockey community in Weyburn, but ultimately family was a large factor in his decision.

“Weyburn is a great hockey town and I have met a lot of great people who I will always consider friends. This was a difficult decision and has been one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make thus far. It’s a decision not just about myself, but also about what is best for my young family. I look forward to seeing who the team hires and I know that person will be inheriting a great group of players, staff, and board members. I wish the team nothing but the best and will always be cheering for the Weyburn Red Wings.”

The search to find a replacement for Thoma will begin immediately, and President Brent Stephanson is looking forward to the process.

“We’re expecting to have a lot of great applicants, just like we did when we hired Bryce. So it will be exciting to see who puts their name in to coach this great franchise.” stated Stephanson who took over as President in June.

The Red Wings would like to thank Bryce for everything he has done for the club over the past three seasons, and wish him and his family all the best moving forward.
